Fuscidea maccarthyi Kantvilas

  Fl. Australia 56A: 209 (2004). T: Pigeon House Mtn, N.S.W., 35°21’S, 156°16’E, c. 650 m, in a very moist, sheltered overhang on coarse sandstone, 28 Nov. 2000, G.Kantvilas 491/00; holo: HO.

Thallus dull olive-brown, 90–200 µm thick, lacking a well-developed marginal prothallus, irregularly verrucose and rimose, or composed of contiguous plane to convex irregular to ±rhomboid areoles 0.1–0.3 mm diam., esorediate; photobiont cells ±roundish, 8–14 µm wide; medulla I–. Apothecia scattered, sessile, constricted at the base, roundish, 0.2–0.4 mm wide, 100–200 µm thick; disc ±persistently plane to slightly convex, black; margin persistent, ±glossy, concolorous with the disc or a little paler, especially at the outer edges, ±level with or extending slightly above the disc. Excipulum in section 40–50 µm thick, ±reddish olive-brown throughout but darker at the outer edge, intensifying olive in KOH. Hypothecium hyaline to pale brown, I–, 100–120 µm thick, inspersed with oil droplets 2–7 µm diam. Hymenium hyaline to pale brown, occasionally inspersed with oil droplets, I+ deep blue, 45–55 µm thick, with a dark olive-brown epihymenial zone 10–20 µm thick, composed of the pigmented upper portions of the paraphyses; pigment intensifying olive in KOH. Paraphyses 1.5–2.0 µm thick, sparingly branched with occasional anastomoses, especially at the base; apices expanded to 3–6 µm and pigmented brown to olive-brown. Asci 38–50 × 10–18 µm. Ascospores simple or more commonly 1-septate, colourless, ellipsoidal or bean-shaped, sometimes very markedly so, 9–13 (–15) × 4–6 µm. Pycnidia uncommon and inconspicuous, immersed, visible as brownish holes 150–180 µm wide; wall scarcely pigmented. Conidia ellipsoidal, 3–4 × 1.5–2.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus K–, C–, KC–, Pd–, UV–; containing sekikaic acid and 4’-O-demethyl-sekikaic acid (±trace).

Endemic to south-eastern N.S.W., and known only from sandstone in the coastal and tableland regions.
